As a budding entrepreneur, there have been peaks along this journey to walking in my destiny. From networking with passionately driven women entrepreneurs making a difference in our community to excitedly planning my next event, I value these moments that have made me smile. With peaks, come valleys. These valleys can be attached to thoughts and feelings of doubt, uncertainty, and fear. These are feelings, I would venture to guess, most of us have experienced and encountered most or some of these feelings. Sometimes those feelings are shown in our nonverbal body language. Do you pay attention to your nonverbal? The frown? the scrunched up forehead? the arms folded?
Nonverbal body language not only communicates to the outside world, but also communicates to yourself. So, what are you are saying to yourself about yourself by the way you carry yourself? Think about it.. Are you saying that I should not have left my “good job” to start my own business? Are you saying that I can’t do this? Are you saying, how am I going to make it and I don’t have any clients? How does your self -doubt, uncertainty and fear present itself? I began to think about all of this after watching a TED talk presented by Social Psychologist, Amy Cuddy. Check out the link. https://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are#t428093.
As we our networking and building our businesses, I believe it is very important to pay attention to our body language. After watching this TED talk there were few points that may be helpful to the budding entrepreneur or even the veteran entrepreneur.
1. “Fake it until you become it!” You might not feel that you are making in headway and your business is slow right now. Know that you will become that what you believe you are!
2. “Practice the power pose.” I grew up being told, to stick my shoulders back, hold my head up, make eye contact with the person that I was speaking with. This foundational stance could be considered the “power pose” according to Amy Cuddy. My advice, incorporate this into your morning ritual. Begin to walk in confidence and know that you were meant to be your own BOSS!
I am a body positive practitioner. I work with women to help them learn how to embrace positive body thoughts to live boldly and confidently. As your own BOSS, it is important to remind yourself that there will be valleys but equally important is it to remember to move yourself out of the way, love yourself and embrace all of the negative feelings. These negative feelings will be used as stepping stones on your journey to fulfilling your destiny!
